A. Chemical Composition (wt %, single value = max)

  • C: 0.25 – 0.40 Cr: 12.0 – 14.0 Ni ≤ 0.6 Mn ≤ 0.6
  • Si: 0.30 – 0.65 P ≤ 0.030 S ≤ 0.030 Mo ≤ 0.75 Cu ≤ 0.75
  • Ferrite Number: 0 – 3 FN (fully martensitic after air-cool)

B. Mechanical Properties (as-welded, 3-layer, Ar+2 %O₂)

  • Tensile Strength (Rm): ≥ 690 MPa (100 ksi)
  • Yield Strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 550 MPa (80 ksi)
  • Elongation (A5): ≥ 15 %
  • Impact Charpy-V: ≥ 27 J @ –20 °C (–4 °F)
  • Hardness: 30 – 35 HRC as-welded | 45 – 50 HRC after PWHT (temper 200 °C / 1 h)

  • Current: 160 – 220 A Voltage: 24 – 28 V Stick-out: 15 mm

  • Inter-pass Temp.: ≤ 250 °C Post-weld: immediate temper 180 – 220 °C to avoid hydrogen crack

Q: Can ER420 weld to 304 stainless?
A: Not advised – brittle martensitic/Austenitic interface; use 309L buffer then 420 overlay.
Q: Do I need pre-heat?
A: For sections > 12 mm pre-heat 250 °C and maintain inter-pass ≤ 250 °C.
Q: Best way to reach 50 HRC?
A: Weld → cool to < 80 °C → temper 200 °C (1 h) → air cool. Repeat for 2 h to convert retained austenite.
